About the artist · Mosaic collage artist & author

Hi, I'm Whitney L Anderson!

I was always a blank, white slate kid. I never liked coloring books or tracing. Give me a piece of paper and a pencil and that was my whole day.

A Duke University fine arts graduate, today I make contemporary realism with a flair of pop-culture nostalgia, entirely by hand. I call myself old school, raw and a purist: no mixed media, no tech shortcuts, just thousands of hours of practice and a lot of magazines.

My story in chapters

From a fishing boat to Art Basel week

Chapter 1

Alaska

Born into a third-generation commercial fishing family. Long seasons in no-man's-land Alaska grew a big imagination and a blue-collar work ethic.

Chapter 2

The blank-slate kid

Drawing since I was 3, painting since 15. No lessons, no coloring books, just paper and a pencil.

Chapter 3

Duke

Duke University on a track and cross-country scholarship. B.A. in Fine Arts, 2009.

Chapter 4

Collage at 27

I picked up scissors and never put them down. Thousands of hand-cut magazine pieces, no shortcuts.

Chapter 5

Roots in Sweden

My first international show was in my ancestral homeland. The trip planted the seed for Miss Metamorphosis.

Chapter 6

Today

Commissions from Georgia to Calgary, art fairs from San Diego to Art Basel week, and a shelf of picture books.
